Pedagogical requirements, sustainable strategies, and new forms of cooperation characterize the discussion and form the programmatic basis for the upcoming SCHULBAU – International Salon and Trade Fair.

The meeting brought together representatives from architecture, politics, administration, and planning, formulating clear guidelines for future educational construction. It became clear that school construction today is far more than just a structural task. Pedagogy, urban development, sustainability, and social responsibility are becoming increasingly intertwined.

All-day schooling transforms school and architecture

A central focus of the discussion was all-day schooling. In Frankfurt am Main, this model has been consistently expanded for years and has now reached a fulfillment rate of around 80 percent. All-day schooling is no longer understood merely as a childcare service, but as a pedagogical concept that places new spatial demands.

Open learning landscapes, cluster structures, and multifunctional spaces are becoming increasingly important. At the same time, there is a growing demand to integrate pedagogical perspectives more strongly into planning processes. The trade fair in Frankfurt will therefore dedicate an important program focus to this topic.

Transformation of existing buildings and new educational sites

In addition to new construction, the transformation of existing buildings is increasingly taking center stage. Discussions included the repurposing of large inner-city properties, such as former department stores, into educational locations.

Projects like the “Schule Neue Börse” show the potential inherent in the further development of existing structures. Multi-use properties that combine education, culture, and community are considered a forward-looking model for urban development.

Sustainability, building culture, and international perspectives

Questions of climate neutrality and sustainable construction were also in focus. The timber construction offensive in Hesse, as well as modular construction methods for schools and daycare centers, show new ways for resource-conserving and simultaneously economical construction. The discussion was supplemented by topics such as climate-adapted open space design, heat protection, and sustainable material strategies.

International perspectives deliberately broaden the view. Examples from the Netherlands and Scandinavian countries are intended to provide new impulses for spatial concepts, school organization, and all-day models at the trade fair.

The advisory board meeting has thus created a clear content-related basis for the upcoming SCHULBAU. All-day schooling, existing building transformation, building culture, and sustainable construction methods characterize the program and combine pedagogical practice, municipal strategies, and architectural quality.

The SCHULBAU – International Salon and Trade Fair in Frankfurt am Main invites you on April 15 and 16, 2026 to further explore these topics together, get to know projects, and develop new partnerships in educational construction.

The advisory board meeting in Frankfurt has defined central themes for the upcoming SCHULBAU – International Salon and Trade Fair.
