The new building not only replaces the destroyed multi-purpose rooms but also adds an administrative area and additional teaching spaces to the school to accommodate increasing student numbers. Four classrooms, two inclusion rooms, two differentiation rooms, a teachers’ room, a secretariat, an office for the school management, and modern restroom facilities were created.

While the administrative wing is single-story, the classroom area spans two floors. Plansite integral design & engineering, a subsidiary of the Brüninghoff Group, was responsible for the general planning – from architecture to technical building equipment. The work was carried out parallel to ongoing school operations and required close coordination with the school management.

© Brüninghoff

Floor slabs with
cross-laminated timber panels
The primary structure is based on timber frame construction on a concrete plinth. Prefabricated wall and ceiling elements enabled quick, resource-efficient assembly and simultaneously reduced noise pollution on the construction site. The load-bearing walls consist of 24-centimeter thick timber frame elements with mineral wool insulation and a wood fiber insulation board. A rear-ventilated, pre-greyed painted timber facade provides long-term protection against weathering.

Cross-laminated timber panels were used for the floor slabs. The elements reached lengths of up to eleven meters and were already provided with protective film at the factory. On-site, only the joints had to be sealed to ensure weather protection. The extensively greened roof features sloped insulation, a drainage layer, and a root-resistant membrane. Color-accented aluminum elements and coated downpipes add design touches.

Photovoltaic system covers
most of the electricity demand
A central component of the project is the sustainable energy concept. A photovoltaic system covers a large part of the electricity demand. Additionally, an air-to-water heat pump combined with underfloor heating ensures efficient heating and cooling. Each classroom received a decentralized ventilation unit for supply and exhaust air and uniform room temperature control. The thermal insulation significantly exceeds the current requirements of the Energy Saving Ordinance. In addition, special curtain walls with spring rails improve sound insulation between classrooms and corridors.

The classrooms face the schoolyard and benefit from large window areas that create a bright learning atmosphere. Administrative and multi-purpose areas are located on the street side, ensuring a clear separation of uses. Three transitions connect the new building with the existing buildings. With the replacement and extension building of St. Michael Primary School, a showcase project for sustainable school construction has been created. The combination of timber construction, modern energy technology, and functional architecture demonstrates how ecological responsibility and contemporary learning spaces can be combined.

Following a severe fire, St. Michael Primary School in the Reichswalde district of Kleve underwent extensive renovation and expansion.
