Room for talent – the student competition in educational construction

Cubus Medien Verlag is setting an example for the educational building culture of tomorrow – with the SCHULBAU student competition, which has been an integral part of our Hamburg trade fair since 2019.

The aim of the competition is to promote a deep understanding of the special requirements of school construction while students are still studying – and to give young talents the chance to test their ideas on real projects.

In cooperation with HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU), architecture students develop visionary concepts for real school building projects in the city of Hamburg. The projects are created on the same information basis as the actual planning process – including site analyses, discussions with school administrators and pedagogical framework conditions.

“The competition is a real affair of the heart for us. We don’t just want to give young people a stage, we want to encourage them to think education forward – boldly, creatively and close to reality.”
Kirsten Jung, Publishing Director Cubus Medien Verlag

Realistic, interdisciplinary and future-oriented

The competition is accompanied by a high-caliber jury with representatives from architecture, administration, education and school construction practice. Together they evaluate the designs from an architectural, functional and pedagogical point of view.

The special feature:

  • The competition combines practical relevance with university teaching,
  • promotes dialog between disciplines,
  • and gives young talent a stage on which their ideas can become visible and effective.

An integral part of the competition is the award ceremony at the SCHULBAU trade fair in Hamburg, where the best designs are presented and honored.

Innovation needs young talent – and visibility

The student competition is more than just a project for our publishing house: it is a contribution to sustainable quality assurance in educational construction. We are convinced:
If you want to shape educational spaces, you have to understand education.
And: The future is created where young ideas meet open ears.

That’s why we invest specifically in supporting budding architects and educators – and give them a format with the competition that inspires, challenges and connects.
