Christian Dalsdorf: School Construction as a Catalyst for Urban Development in Nordhavn

An Educational Project for an Entire District

Copenhagen is one of Europe’s most dynamic urban expansion areas. In the former harbor district of Nordhavn, new living spaces are emerging—mixed-use and future-oriented. In the midst of this transformation, education is being reimagined. Christian Dalsdorf, Project Manager at By & Havn, will speak at the SCHULBAU ThinkTank Copenhagen 2025 about the “Nordhavn 2026” tender—an initiative that views school construction as an urban planning tool.

The planned site is intended to be understood as a public component with impact on the district. In his presentation, Christian Dalsdorf provides insight into the complex interplay of political governance, architectural ambition, and civic responsibility. This involves more than spatial organization. It addresses the question of how educational buildings can be integrated early on in newly developing districts—as places of learning, exchange, and community life.

The “Nordhavn 2026” tender marks a strategic step in the long-term development of the area. For Christian Dalsdorf, it is clear: schools can provide catalytic impulses when understood as integral components of urban planning. His presentation will explore what this approach looks like in practice, what requirements are associated with it, and which levers are effective from an urban planning perspective.

The SCHULBAU Think Tank Copenhagen 2025 will take place on June 3, 2025, at Trifolium. The event brings together architects, urban planners, political decision-makers, investors, and education experts from across the Baltic Sea region. Christian Dalsdorf’s contribution offers a valuable perspective on the interplay of urban development, tendering culture, and public educational infrastructure.
