Historical Structures Reimagined

With the expansion and redesign of the Kaiserin-Augusta-School in Cologne, a school building has been created that harmonizes tradition and modernity. The concept by Zila Architekt.innen embraces and further develops the historical urban landscape. The architecture seamlessly integrates into the intricate structure of Cologne’s city center, while simultaneously creating a forward-looking learning environment.

A School Ensemble with New Dynamics

The new south wing completes the perimeter block development and defines a clear edge to the quarter’s thoroughfare. This creates a sheltered courtyard within the ensemble. Here, historical references meet modern spatial concepts: red water-struck bricks echo the traditional urban landscape, while a uniform window grid ensures clarity. Light mortar joints lend lightness to the massive facade.

Flexible Spaces for Learning and Interaction

The school relies on a well-conceived connection between old and new buildings. A centrally located atrium serves as a communicative heart and fosters a sense of community. The multifunctional auditorium can be used as an event space or cafeteria, while the upper floors provide 26 classrooms and eight childcare rooms.

Continuous transparency in the rooms supports an open, appreciative learning culture. Large wooden windows bring daylight into the building and create a flowing transition to the outside world. The choice of materials – an interplay of exposed concrete, wood, and linoleum – creates a pleasant atmosphere that promotes calm and concentration.

Staircase as a Connecting Element

A striking architectural element is the generously designed staircase, which interlinks the different levels. It not only provides access but also becomes a social meeting place. Wide seating steps and open intermediate spaces invite people to linger and support informal conversations.

Even the corridors are more than mere thoroughfares. Integrated benches along the walls create small retreats that foster social interaction between students and teachers.

Award for Thoughtful Design

The successful balance of tradition and modernity was honored with the Cologne Architecture Prize 2024. The jury particularly highlighted the successful integration of the new building into the urban environment and the use of natural materials. Additionally, the project was nominated for the prestigious BDA Prize NRW 2024.

The Kaiserin-Augusta-School has emerged as a flagship project for educational architecture: a place that connects past and future and sets new standards for urban schools.
