Building new schools, rethinking the existing building stock

From new school construction and heritage restoration to the conversion of an office building into a school centre: Julius Beier brings wide-ranging experience in educational construction. The architect and project manager at AFF Architekten will be taking part in SCHULBAU Berlin as a speaker.

His previous projects include a primary school with daycare on a former barracks site in Potsdam-Krampnitz, a comprehensive school with canteen and sports halls in Berlin-Adlershof, as well as the new-build of the Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium at Berlin Ostbahnhof. Since 2025, he has been leading the planning for the conversion of an office building into a vocational school centre in Nuremberg—a pilot project by the Montag Stiftung as part of “Schulbau Open Source”. His work thus combines different tasks and scales: creating new educational spaces, further developing existing buildings, and unlocking potential within the existing building stock.

The speaker
Julius Beier studied architecture at the Universität der Künste Berlin and graduated with a Master’s degree in 2020. While still studying, he worked at AFF Architekten as well as at ppp architekten + stadtplaner. He has been part of the AFF Architekten team since 2021, and since 2024 as a project manager.
