Room for More: Room for Play Despite Limited Resources

How can space be created in an educational building that goes beyond the strictly necessary? Spanish architect Pau Sarquella addresses this question at SCHULBAU Berlin. His presentation “Room for More” introduces two kindergartens that were developed under very different conditions yet pursue a common question.

Limited budgets, regulations, and existing conditions become opportunities for new spatial possibilities. Open areas, intermediate spaces, and rooms without fixed uses expand the offering beyond the requirements of the brief. They enable different uses and leave room for play in everyday life. The presentation shows how concrete constraints can become the starting point for a design.

Pau Sarquella is an architect and university lecturer based in Banyoles, Spain. Together with Carmen Torres, he founded the firm Sarquella Torres. Their work examines how place, use, and time shape architecture and leave room for adaptation.

In addition to his practice, Sarquella teaches architectural design at the University of Girona and at La Salle–URL. Previously, he taught at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. He is also part of the curatorial team for the UIA World Congress of Architecture Barcelona 2026.
