Cologne is launching a billion-euro school construction program: a total of 1.7 billion euros is to be invested in new schools and the renovation of existing buildings. Plans include two new comprehensive schools in Deutz and Ossendorf. The pressure is high – Cologne is currently short of 54 schools, while 192 projects are awaiting implementation.
Securing the future viability of educational infrastructure
The enormous investment backlog in the education sector is not only a problem in Cologne. Many large German cities have been struggling for years with growing student numbers, dilapidated school buildings, and insufficient capacity. At the same time, the demands on modern schools are increasing: in addition to energy-efficient renovation, the focus is also on digitalization, all-day care, and contemporary learning spaces. Experts therefore see investment in educational construction as crucial for the future viability of cities and their social development.
First investment program launches
In order to implement projects more quickly, Cologne is once again relying on general contractors who are to hand over schools to the city on a turnkey basis. An initial school construction program with a volume of 520 million euros is already underway.
